OCEANIC – WAVEC

The OCEANIC project has developed protective coatings for ocean renewable energy devices with the aim of increasing their reliability and lifespan (OCEANIC coating). The OCEANIC project has developed protective coatings for ocean renewable energy devices with the aim of increasing their reliability and lifespan (OCEANIC coating). To achieve this, a new technique emerging from the maritime transport sector has been used, which prevents marine organisms from fouling through the trace emission of an organic biocide. The OCEANIC project aims to merge this new anti-fouling technique with an anti-corrosion technique already established on the market, the coating of aluminium by thermal spraying.

Challenges Addressed:

The developments carried out as part of this project have made it possible, among other things:

  • Merge a new anti-fouling technique with an anti-corrosion technique already established on the market, the coating of aluminium by thermal spraying, and achieve a unique protection system that makes it possible to obtain long-term protection against colonisation and corrosion.

Practical Benefits for Society:

Following the completion of OCEANIC a number of benefits have been achieved, such as:

  • Mapping of the different pressures caused by colonisation and their potential corrosive effects at different European test sites.
  • European database with the geographical distribution and qualitative and quantitative data of the main colonisers, in order to support the Marine Renewable Energy sector and other industries operating in the marine environment.
