The ORION – Optimised Remote radIOtherapy plaNning project aims to create a global approach to radiotherapy treatment planning, enabling better management of human resources. ORION aims to automate the process of building treatment plans by combining image editing and 3D modelling techniques with artificial intelligence, to change the paradigm for licensing software for creating treatment plans and to bring the demand and supply of dosimetry closer together at a global level by creating a network that brings together radiotherapy professionals and centres.
Promoters:
Consortium made up of:
Partners:
- Advanced Care Oncology Center;
- Altnagelvin Hospital;
- Siemens Healthcare Pty Ltd.
Challenges Addressed:
The developments under this project enabled the following advancements:
- Increased quality of the treatment plan, which is not dependent on the time available to the planner;
- Creation of tools and technologies that speed up the construction of the treatment plan.
Practical Benefits for Society:
Following the completion of ORION, a number of benefits have been realised, such as:
- Improved radiotherapy treatments in developed countries, where the majority of the population has access to therapy;
- This technology can also benefit undeveloped or developing countries, where the majority of the population is deprived of radiotherapy care due to the lack of equipment and the lack of specialised professionals.
