European Commission publishes report on the integration of social sciences and humanities in Horizon Europe

4.Aug.2025

First analysis covers projects funded between 2021 and 2023 under Pillar II of the program

The European Commission has published its first monitoring report dedicated to the integration of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in projects funded by Pillar II of Horizon Europe between 2021 and 2023. The document analyzes the degree of incorporation of SSH in scientific and technological areas, promoting interdisciplinary approaches with greater societal and economic impact.

The report focuses on topics identified as relevant to SSH in Clusters 1 to 6 of Pillar II — “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness” — as well as in the European Union’s Missions. It also includes an overview of the presence of SSH in other components of the program, such as WIDERA, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, the European Research Council, and Research Infrastructures.

According to the analysis, around 40% of the topics funded under this pillar are considered relevant to SSH, reflecting a clear trend towards greater integration of social and human disciplines in multiple areas of research and innovation.

This report marks a first stage in assessing the contribution of SSH to Horizon Europe, with a comprehensive analysis of the entire program planned for after 2027, when the total budget has been committed.
