ANI Participates in the Conference “AI – A Governance Model and a Strategy for Portugal” Organized by APDSI

10.Oct.2024

On October 4th, APDSI hosted the conference titled “AI – A Governance Model and a Strategy for Portugal”, which saw participation from Sílvia Garcia and Helena Costa of the ANI.

The event underscored the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across society, including sectors such as work, health, education, transport, culture, and the arts, with significant implications for the global economy.

What’s more, the recent European legislation passed a few months ago, the AI Act, the world’s first regulation passed to define the limits of Artificial Intelligence applications, will quickly bring legal and institutional requirements that our country will soon have to comply with. From APDSI’s point of view, it is necessary to join the individual efforts of so many public and private organizations that are attentive to the progress of Artificial Intelligence, but whose sporadic and partial efforts, although very useful, may not have the strength of a real, coordinated and aligned agenda.

The conference “AI – A governance model and a strategy for Portugal”, held in the Noble Hall of the National Press, Casa da Moeda, brought together the actions of institutions such as ANI, INCoDe.2030, FCT, AMA, INCM, among many other public institutions, but also from the private sector, with the desire to transform them into a plan that could emerge from the national government’s initiative.

The aim of this debate was to build bridges between the institutions that are already active agents in this transformation, urging them to join forces in implementing a national plan whose guidelines we hope will emanate from the government.

Also present were the Secretary of State for Science, Ana Paiva and the Minister for Youth and Modernization, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, President of the Board of Directors of the AMA, Sofia Mota, President Director General of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA), Ignasia Belda and Maria Joao Graça, Member of the Board of Directors of the IPQ.
