The European Commission has announced the results of the European Innovation Scoreboard 2023 (EIS), a European ranking, with annual publication, which aims to measure and monitor the performance of Member States in terms of innovation, demonstrating that Europe’s innovative performance has improved since 2016. Portugal is again positioned as Innovative Moderator, in 18th position, alongside Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia.
According to the report, Portugal has a performance of 85.6% compared to the European Union (EU) average and the country has increased its performance by 7.7 percentage points since 2016, which places it among the 15 countries whose performance has grown more than the European average.
The results achieved by the country under the EIS 2023, demonstrate that the national investment in Science and Technology in recent years allowed Portugal to obtain excellent results in several indicators as Foreign PhD Students, Government support to companies’ R&D, public-private co-publishments and sale of Innovative Products.
The report also presents the weaknesses of the report on corporate investment, which is below the European average, in the export of High-Tech Goods and Knowledge-Based Services, in Environmental Sustainability, Venture Capital Expenditures and Design and Patent Applications.
EIS 2023 provides a comparative assessment of the research and innovation performance of EU Member States and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their research and innovation systems. It helps Member States to assess the areas in which they should focus their efforts to improve their innovation performance.
