The CBE JU is one of nine institutional partnerships under Horizon Europe (HE), involving the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). It supports circular bioindustries, aligning with HE rules while including specific provisions. It operates according to the rules of Horizon Europe (HE), but with some specificities.
Portugal has already secured around 7 million euros in the 12 projects selected for funding in the two calls of the CBE JU under Horizon Europe (in 2022 and 2023), which corresponds to more than 2% of the available funding. Regarding the 22 national participants in these projects, notable entities include IST-ID (with 3 participations, including 1 coordination) and Biotrend SA (with 2 participations), with approximately 50% being companies.
The BIC is instrumental in defining the priorities of the Annual Work Programmes of the CBE JU It includes members from a wide range of sectors including agriculture, human and animal food, aquatic and marine, chemicals and materials, technology suppliers, forestry and pulp, waste managers, and brand owners. It comprises more than 240 Industry (Full) Members (large companies, SMEs, clusters) and over 200 Associate Members (universities, research institutes, public institutions, technology platforms, regional organizations). From Portugal, the following companies are already part of the BIC consortium: A4F and AlgaFuel, S.A., and Biotrend S.A. (Full Members); CeNTI, CCMAR, and RAIZ (Associate Members).
