2 PORTUGUESE TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES FUNDED BY THE EUROPEAN INNOVATION COUNCIL

18.Oct.2022

Portugal has been close to 22M€ since March 2021

C2C-NewCap and Immunethep, national technology companies, will receive 7.8 million euros (€M) from the European Innovation Council (EIC) to finish the development and bring to the market technologies that will meet major industry challenges.

In addition to financial support, projects will benefit from Business Acceleration Services that provide access to investment and growth opportunities worldwide.

The EIC aims to support start-ups and SMEs with disruptive technologies to develop their business on a global scale by offering up to €2.5 million in non-refundable funding combined with equity investments up to €15M from the EIC Fund.

C2C-NewCap will receive €5.4 million from the European Innovation Council to develop and bring to market two products based on supercondensator technology to replace lead batteries in heavy vehicles and tantalum condensers. Lead is a toxic metal and tantalum is a critical raw material and originated in countries with political and social conflicts. Lead batteries and capacitors are part of our daily lives, being present in vehicles and electronic devices, respectively.

The disruptive technologies developed by C2C-NewCap bring a more sustainable electrochemical solution that maximizes energy use, and minimizes operational and environmental costs.

Immunethep, a company from Biocant Park in Cantanhede, is developing a vaccine that protects against 5 bacteria responsible for 80% of bacterial infections in humans. These bacteria pose a serious problem due to their antibiotic resistance. The vaccine is stable at different temperatures which makes it easy to store and transport.

Immunethep will receive €2.5M in a first phase, making it eligible for an additional investment that allows it to follow up clinical trials and scale worldwide.

Since the opening of the European Innovation Council competitions in March 2021, Portugal has already added close to €22M of funding, approved for 7 national technology companies. In addition to C2C New-Cap and Immunethep, they received funding from RUBYnanomed, Arborea, AI4MedImaging, PeekMed and WATGRID.

Companies have been supported by the ANI, in access to financing, through the network of the National Contact Points to Horizon Europe and the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN).
