Regulation for Supporting R&D&I Projects in the Semiconductor Sector within the Framework of the National Semiconductor Strategy Implementation

7.Nov.2024

The National Innovation Agency (ANI) has republished the Regulation that will enable support for research, innovation, and development projects in the field of semiconductors.

This regulation aims to support the implementation of the National Semiconductor Strategy, approved on December 7, 2023, and enacted through the Council of Ministers Resolution No. 12/2024, which outlines the guidelines and research priorities for the semiconductor sector in Portugal.

This regulation aims to establish a framework for allocating national support to co-finance projects aligned with Pillar 1, the so-called Initiative, of the European Chips Act, implemented through the European CHIPS Joint Undertaking (CHIPS JU). This initiative places particular emphasis on the development of pilot lines, design platforms, quantum chips, and associated semiconductor technologies.

Under Pillar I of the European Chips Act, the Chips JU aims to strengthen the European semiconductor ecosystem and Europe’s technological leadership by fostering the connection between research, innovation, and production, thereby facilitating the commercialization of innovative ideas.

At the national level, ANI and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) provide complementary support for initiatives launched under the CHIPS JU.
